Archbishop John Wilson Visits CAPS Ahead of World AIDS Day (2026)

Imagine facing a life-altering diagnosis, feeling isolated and alone. Now, picture finding a community where faith and support intertwine, offering solace and strength. That's the reality Catholics for AIDS Prevention & Support (CAPS) provides, and recently, they received a special visit.

Archbishop John Wilson, a dedicated Patron of CAPS and the Archbishop of Southwark, recently joined the POSITIVE FAITH HIV peer-support meeting on November 27th. This monthly gathering provides a safe space for individuals living with HIV to connect, share experiences, pray together, and enjoy a communal meal. Think of it as a family dinner, but with a shared understanding of the unique challenges HIV presents.

The visit took place just before World AIDS Day (WAD) on December 1st, an internationally recognized day for reflection and action. "WAD is a time to reflect on the meaning of HIV in our world and society," explains Dr. Vincent Manning, the Director of CAPS, "reminding us to act in solidarity with people living with HIV (PLWH), many of whom live in poverty or precarious situations as migrants and refugees. POSITIVE FAITH creates a place of safety where PLWH support each other to make faith-sense of living with HIV." These meetings aren't just in Southwark, either; CAPS extends its reach with meetings in Manchester and Cambridgeshire.

And this is the part most people miss: the intersection of faith and practical support. POSITIVE FAITH isn't just about prayer; it's about creating a tangible network of care and understanding. It's about helping individuals navigate the complexities of living with HIV while finding meaning and purpose within their faith.

Dr. Manning himself represented CAPS at a WAD reception hosted by The Ambassador of Ireland, HE Mr. Martin Fraser, and Mrs. Deirdre Fraser, at the Irish Embassy in London on December 1st. From the very beginning of the AIDS crisis, Irish individuals – both lay and religious – have played a pivotal role in leading the Church's response to HIV in Britain and Ireland. Several Irish gay men were even founding members of the POSITIVE FAITH ministry. In fact, CAPS stands as the only remaining national Christian charity exclusively dedicated to offering pastoral support to all PLWH across Great Britain and Ireland.

But here's where it gets controversial... While the Catholic Church's stance on certain issues related to HIV prevention and treatment can be complex, the unwavering commitment of individuals within the Church to supporting those affected cannot be denied. This dedication to practical care and pastoral support often bridges divides and offers a vital lifeline to vulnerable communities.

Looking ahead, a special Mass themed "Journeying Together for an HIV-free World" was held on Saturday, December 6th at 3pm at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Farm Street, London. This event, co-sponsored by the Westminster Diocese LGBT Pastoral Council and CAPS, served as the only public, faith-based event in Central London commemorating World AIDS Day. The Mass featured panels from the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt, alongside two CAPS' Quilts representing the Catholic response to HIV both historically and in the present day. Canon Pat Browne served as the chief celebrant, and Cardinal Timothy Radcliffe OP, a Patron of CAPS, delivered the sermon.
