As a young family residing in this house encounters eerie phenomena—from birds dropping dead to unexplained injuries—the crew tracks down this enigmatic figure, convincing him to revisit his hometown. But here's where it gets controversial: the film's creation was a marathon, not a sprint.
The Film That Almost Wasn't: It's a little cringe-worthy to admit, but it took a whopping 12 years to bring 'Heathen' to life. We joked about its protracted development, comparing it to the legendary 'Chinese Democracy' album. It became 'The Film,' then 'Oh-God-Don’t-Mention-The-Film.' Life, finances, and full-time jobs conspired to stall the process, but after a laborious journey, 'Heathen' finally saw the light of day.

For us, the Cavan Arts Office was a game-changer, offering funding, connections, and help with local crew and locations. Build relationships with these organizations; they can make or break your project.
The Power of a Tight Script: This is where we could've done better. Initially, 'Heathen' was envisioned as a feature-length film, but time constraints forced us to rush the writing. The script lacked the polish it deserved, and we paid for it later. Start writing early, revise relentlessly, and employ a good script editor. A solid story foundation can weather any storm.
Working Within Your Means: Writing to your budget is crucial. We couldn't film a nuclear explosion in Belturbet, so we adapted our story to fit our resources. We shot in a handheld style, wrote around our locations, and adapted the story to a documentary format to avoid elaborate production costs. We also shot over several weeks, working around people's schedules, which proved stressful. Lesson learned: plan meticulously.
The Cast & Crew: Your Secret Weapon: Despite our limited budget, we ensured our cast and crew were paid and well-cared for. Our lead actor, Tommy, a local theater talent, carried the film. Our line producer, Aine, kept the show running smoothly. Our art director, Rosie, scoured Cavan for dead birds (rest assured, they were buried with respect). People want to help, so treat them well.
