John Stella, a full professor at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, has been honored as an Exemplary Researcher for 2026-27, recognizing his distinguished contributions to sustainable resource management and climate resilience research. As a long-time leader in the Department of Sustainable Resources Management, Stella has dedicated over 20 years to examining how droughts and climate shifts influence riparian ecosystems—issues gaining global urgency due to intensifying water scarcity across the western U.S. and beyond. His research has secured $7.5 million in competitive grants from prestigious institutions such as the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Defense’s Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program, and the Nature Conservancy, while co-founding a $1.5 million Bay-Delta Science award for 2026-28 that underscores ESF’s role in California water policy. Stella’s 70 peer-reviewed publications and 12 book chapters solidify his reputation as a leading academic. Guiding 22 students and trainees, he has fostered innovation through mentorship, with four doctoral students now holding positions in university research programs and federal agencies. His international presentations and editorial work since 2016 highlight his commitment to advancing ecological knowledge. Under his leadership, ESF experienced a 50% rise in research expenditures, marking one of the largest sustained increases in the college’s history.
