Water Crisis in Kent: A Chemical Issue Leaves Thousands Without Water
A chemical issue at the Pembury Water Treatment Works in Tunbridge Wells has left thousands of people in Kent without water, with schools forced to close. The crisis has caused significant disruption, affecting at least 23,000 customers, many of whom still face low water pressure or no supply as of Monday.
The problem began when a 'bad batch of coagulant chemicals' caused the water not to be pumped into storage tanks, leading to low water levels. Coagulant chemicals are essential in both drinking and wastewater treatment, helping tiny particles in water to clump together for easier removal. A new batch of chemicals was received on Sunday, but refilling storage tanks is a slow process to avoid further network issues.
South East Water (SEW) initially estimated the issue would be resolved by 6 am on December 1st, but this was extended to 2 pm. Once the storage tanks are at an adequate level, SEW will send drinking water to the Blackhurst tank, which supplies the entire town of Tunbridge Wells. Residents may notice brown, white, or cloudy water upon the return of the supply, which is normal due to naturally occurring deposits.
The impact on residents has been significant. Households have experienced minimal or no water supply, and schools, businesses, libraries, community centers, and sports centers have been unable to open. The Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre and The Camden Centre community hall were closed on Monday, and many schools remained shut due to a lack of water.
Social media has been abuzz with residents expressing their frustration. Teresa Barrett, from the Black Horse pub in Tunbridge, described the situation as 'difficult' and inquired about compensation. SEW has promised to address compensation for affected customers once the incident is fully resolved.
To alleviate the crisis, multiple bottled water stations have been set up in the area to distribute water to local residents until supplies are fully restored. The following stations opened on Monday from 8:30 am:
- Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre, St John's Rd, Royal Tunbridge Wells TN4 9TX
- RCP Parking, Tunbridge Wells, TN2 5TP
- Odeon Cinema Knights Way, Tunbridge Wells TN2 3UW
SEW has also delivered bottled water to over 2,000 of its most vulnerable customers, demonstrating a commitment to supporting those most affected by the water crisis.
