Labyrinth Movie Re-Release 2026: Jim Henson, David Bowie, and More (2025)

Prepare to journey back to a fantastical world! If you're feeling nostalgic for goblins, David Bowie's epic hair, and Jennifer Connelly's quest, you're in luck. The Jim Henson classic, Labyrinth, is returning to theaters in January 2026 for a special 40th-anniversary re-release. Get ready to relive the magic on the big screen!

Following a year packed with cinematic revivals like Twilight and Back to the Future, 2026 is kicking off with a beloved gem from our collective childhood. The Jim Henson Company is partnering with Fathom Events to bring Labyrinth back to movie theaters, allowing a new generation (and seasoned fans) to experience this iconic film. But here's where it gets controversial... will it hold up to modern standards, or is nostalgia doing all the heavy lifting?

The re-release, timed to celebrate the film's 40th anniversary in June 2026 (December in the UK), offers more than just a trip down memory lane. From January 8th to 11th, audiences can immerse themselves in a stunning 4K restoration of the film. And this is the part most people miss: the re-release also includes a special featurette showcasing the film's devoted fanbase, captured at a recent themed ball in the UK. It's a celebration of Labyrinth's enduring legacy and the community it has fostered.

According to Fathom CEO Ray Nutt, "We are honored to bring this 1986 epic back to theaters...for its 40th anniversary...The magical combination of Jim Henson, George Lucas, David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly and hundreds of extraordinary creatures and puppets from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop made Labyrinth a landmark fantasy classic." It's a testament to the film's unique blend of talent and artistry.

Interestingly, Labyrinth, which marked Jennifer Connelly's feature film debut, wasn't initially a box office success in the US. It fared much better in the UK (perhaps Bowie's star power had something to do with that!). Despite the initial mixed reception, the film found its audience through home video and has since become a cult classic. Its influence extends beyond the screen, with video games, books, and even a sequel comic book further expanding the Labyrinth universe. Sony even announced plans for a sequel back in 2016, but progress stalled until Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Northman) was tapped to direct in January 2024. This raises the question: can Eggers recapture the magic of the original, or will the sequel fall short of expectations?

So, while we eagerly await news on the Labyrinth sequel, don't miss the chance to experience the original on the big screen once again. You can find ticket information here [link to tickets].
