Binotto's photograph, taken on November 28 near Possagno, Italy, showcases a breathtaking sight. He describes the image: "A sprite, the red tentacle-like structure, shares the frame with an ELVE, the red 'flying disc' surrounding it." But this is no ordinary occurrence; it's a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Sprites are already considered rare, but ELVEs are the true giants of the sky, both in size and rarity. Binotto explains the phenomenon: "ELVEs are born from exceptionally powerful lightning strikes, creating an intense electromagnetic pulse (EMP). The red ring in the photo marks the impact point of the EMP on the Earth's ionosphere." And this particular ELVE was a behemoth, measuring a staggering 85 kilometers (53 miles) tall and 230 kilometers (143 miles) wide. To put it into perspective, Binotto humorously compares it to the alien mothership from the movie Independence Day, which was 550 kilometers (342 miles) in diameter.
But capturing these elusive phenomena is no easy feat. Binotto reveals the challenges: "With regular cameras, it's nearly impossible due to the low light and infrared emission. I modified my camera to capture the infrared band, making it possible to photograph these events." And his dedication paid off. In 2023, he captured an even larger ELVE, measuring 359 kilometers (223 miles) wide, a testament to his skill and perseverance.
The circumstances of this capture were equally remarkable. Binotto had to record video and adjust his camera settings to a high ISO with a wide-open lens, all in a fraction of a second. But the real surprise was capturing a sprite simultaneously. Both phenomena were triggered by a single positive lightning strike over the Adriatic Sea, an incredible 350 kilometers (217 miles) away, with a peak current of 387 kA—a force ten times stronger than a typical lightning strike.
ELVE, or Emissions of Light and Very Low-Frequency Perturbations due to Electromagnetic Pulse Sources, is a rare variant of sprites, which are themselves large-scale electrical discharges occurring high above thunderstorm clouds. Scientists continue to study these captivating phenomena, and Binotto's work provides invaluable visual data.
